Opened in 1883 as a black grammar school, Meigs added grades 9 and 10 in 1886 and grades 11 and 12 in 1887 to become the first black high school in Nashville.  It was named in honor of James L. Meigs, Nashville's second superintendent of schools. Today it is a middle school.
